Title of dissertation: A PHYLOGENETIC AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF SANGUISORBEAE (ROSACEAE), WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PLEISTOCENE RADIATION OF THE HIGH ANDEAN GENUS POLYLEPIS. Malin Sofia Kerr, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Charles F. Delwiche Dr. James L. Reveal A phylogenetic and biogeographic analysis of the tribe Sanguisorbeae (Rosaceae) was conducted with emphasis on the radiation of the Andean tree Polylepis. Phylogenetic analyses of coding and non-coding nuclear markers reveal a complex evolutionary history of the tribe including ancient and recent allopolyploid hybridization. Sanguisorba sensu lato is shown to be paraphyletic and split between the allopolyploid hybrid Sanguisorba and the non-hybrid Poterium and Poteridium. A monophyletic origin of the southern hemispheric subtribe Sanguisorbinae is supported, and this clade is given a phylogentic taxon name (Verruchaena). Dating analyses using the penalized likelihood method suggest that this taxon originated in the late Miocene. A biogeographic hypothesis is presented in which Verruchaena originated in the New World with subsequent transoceanic dispersals to southern Africa and Australasia. The paramo genus Polylepis most likely arose from hybridization between two Andean ancestors supporting a “vertical” rather than “horizontal” origin of this taxon. A PHYLOGENETIC AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF SANGUISORBEAE (ROSACEAE), WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PLEISTOCENE RADIATION OF THE HIGH ANDEAN GENUS POLYLEPIS.

Phylogenetic and biogeographic study of the Andean genus Grundulus (Teleostei: Characiformes: Characidae)

The genus Grundulus Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1846 has three valid species from Andean coldwater lakes of northern South America in the northwestern Andes: G. bogotensis Humboldt in Humboldt & Valenciennes, 1833 from the Bogotá plateau (Magdalena basin of Colombia); G. cochae Román-Valencia, Paepke & Pantoja, 2003 from La Cocha lake, located in southern Colombia (Amazons Phylogen...

The assembly of montane biotas: linking Andean tectonics and climatic oscillations to independent regimes of diversification in Pionus parrots.

The mechanisms underlying the taxonomic assembly of montane biotas are still poorly understood. Most hypotheses have assumed that the diversification of montane biotas is loosely coupled to Earth history and have emphasized instead the importance of multiple long-distance dispersal events and biotic interactions, particularly competition, for structuring the taxonomic composition and distributi...

Phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships of the mouse opossum Thylamys (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in southern South America.

Nucleotide sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among mouse opossum species of the genus Thylamys. Based on approximately 1000 bp in five of the six species of the genus and including different localities for some of the species, we concluded that T. macrura from the subtropical forests of eastern Paraguay is the most primit...

Phylogeny and biogeography of the genus Pelinoides Cresson (Diptera-Ephydridae)

A phylogenetic analysis of the 21 species of genus Pelinoides using 44 discrete morphological characters is presented. From the previous proposed three groups, pallipes, sulcatus and cyclocerus, the first is recovered. The sulcatus group appears as paraphyletic in terms of cyclocerus. Pelinoides is present in the Neotropical and Andean Regions and in the Transitional South American Zone. Four a...

Historical Biogeography of a Clade of Liolaemus (iguania: Liolaemidae) Based on Ancestral Areas and Dispersal-vicariance Analysis (diva)

Although many phylogenetic studies have been made on the genus Liolaemus, they are inappropriate for a biogeographic study because of incomplete taxon sampling. Here we develop a biogeographic analysis using a new phylogenetic study of the chiliensis group, which differs from the other studies in having his members fully represented. The biogeographic analysis presented here consists in reconst...
